Elder Logan Porter made it to Hawaii on Monday, August 29th
2016. Because it was on a Monday, he missed his p-day. We knew we would not hear
from him for another week. This meant we would not know what island he was on
or where he was serving. The hard part was the day he landed, they were
receiving two hurricanes. Madeline and Lester. I knew that the Lord would take
care of him and protect him. As mom not knowing where he was at was really
hard. We decided all we could do was pray and have faith. That evening in the
middle of the night I received a text from the wonderful family who fed him his
first meal while in his new area in Hawaii. How amazing is that!! My heart was
so excited and full of gratitude. Here is the picture and message they sent:
Throughout the next couple days they sent me more pictures
and more texts about the area that my son was serving in. Like my own little
personal tour guide. It was so nice and so awesome and comforting knowing he is
okay and being taken care of. Here are some of the pics and info they sent me.
“Hurricane season is upon us, Madeline has
passed going south of the Big Island, and Lester is behind with more rain and
strong winds coming. But heading more north of the islands. Not to worry, it's
such a blessing to have missionaries! Elder Siaosi, was so excited to finally
have a companion after so long and introduced him to everyone! Elder Porter
will soon find out that most of the ward members are related. Not only Brothers
and Sisters, aunties, uncles, and cousins too. My brother-in-law Bro. Sanchez
said, he is a seasoned missionary. And he has already blessed our home... thank
you for supporting your son. Aloha”
“Elder Siaosi was in a three some with the
zone leader district leader in Waimea, for over a month. So he is over joyed to
have Elder Porter! I know how little information and details you get from
emails, their busy daily schedules. And there is wisdom in not knowing
everything, I've learned. There is an increase of faith, prayers, and trust in
the Lord from both parents and missionary. And a box of hair color usually
helps me, haha! Kohala is a small town on the north tip of the Big Island, and
population about 1,200 people my nephew said. Hawi is the main part of town,
and if you blink your eyes, you may miss everything! We have 3 grocery stores,
2 post offices, 1 Credit Union, 1 hospital, 1 pharmacy, 1 dental office, 1 High
& Elem. School, and a middle school. Kohala zipline, and what most people
come to see, King Kamehameha statue. We have the original statue as, Pololu
Valley was his birth place. I will leave the rest for to come and discover.
Hurricane Lester is a cat 2 and moving more north of the Big Island. Thank you
for your prayers. My son return in Dec. He loves being a missionary and so will
Elder Porter, he is an awesome missionary!”
King's View, an eating place right across
of the King Kamehameha statue.
Kapa'au, passed the entrance to Kamehameha Park
& pool. In the older part of town, going towards the statue on the right,
and the courthouse behind.
This road leads to Pololu Valley.
Pioneer Federal
Credit Union, only banking facility in Kohala.
Takata Store, is where we
usually shop. Nearest Walmart is in Kona, only Costco in Kona too. Kohala High
& Elementary school.
The second night I received another text and photo. Elder
Porter looks so happy and I know that's exactly where he needs to be. Here is
the picture and text I got the second night:
“Your elder just shared a beautiful message with us. He is truly amazing
& we love him already. Ty for raising such a fine young man. Aloha, bro
& sister Kupukaa”
I feel so grateful to
have a son serving a mission in today's day and age with the technology to be
able to see pics of him and to have these wonderful families reach out to us. I
know with all my heart Heavenly Father is watching over him.
