Hard times today, Better person tomorrow

Hello everyone, how are you all doing? I hope all is well and you are enjoying your week! This week was slow regarding missionary work, not a whole lot worked out for us. However I do think I learned more this week than any other week. This week I want to share some of what I learned. But first let me tell you about Uncle Earl.

Uncle Earl Veloria is one of the Kupuna's of Kohala. Meaning of the older generation. He is one of those people that everyone knows. He’s so awesome. I love him. But he is famous here for being the best supervisor around, and as a missionary that does service every week for him; I’m blessed to run around doing exactly what he says. Let me tell ya, you learn exact obedience real quick Haha. We started out digging holes. If you remember the movie holes, that’s what I felt like. Then we filled all the holes with rotten tuna fish. He gets barrels of this every week. When the fresh catch comes in, they are cut up for sale. He gets all the scraps and lets it sit out and rot for a few days. Then we dump it in the holes for fertilizer. It is one of those things I’ll never forget doing lol.

So I’m learning that when you pray for patience, you are blessed with opportunities to exercise your patience. When you pray for charity, you are blessed with opportunities to be charitable. When you pray for others hearts to be softened, you are blessed with opportunities to help them do so. I never realized that praying for some of these things lead to opportunities to exercise what you have. This week was one of those weeks where the prayers I have been saying all came crashing down with opportunities. It was the most stressful, patience trying, and long week yet on the mission... probably in life too. But I am learning that it is only though putting your qualities to the test that you can grow and progress. It is only by being put in situations where you can put you studies to the test. It is only through trials that we can become like Christ. Look at the things he went through during his life. That is our purpose for this life to gain a body, to go through trials and tribulations so we can exercise our agency and grow closer to or further from Christ as our decisions determine. This week was rough, until I realized how blessed I was for these things because it gave me a chance to know my savior more, it gave me a chance to exercise my agency, and although I wasn't perfect in these moments it gave me a chance to grow closer to and being more Christ like.

Friends and family "this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors." (Alma 34:32) It is in our day to day lives and the little decisions we make that we prepare to meet God. It is through trials that we can do what is right and prepare ourselves for that moment. Our lives are short in this eternal life we are a part of. Do what is right. Follow the Savior’s example. And as my best friend would say "Do Good" TM. I know this gospel is true, I know our Heavenly Father loves me and you.

This is all for this week, but let me know if anyone has any questions about Hawaii or the life here. I’m not always sure what to tell you about the culture! I hope you all have a splendid week, and take those opportunities to know our savior Jesus Christ more. Love you all!
